Frozen AC Coil and Strange AC Noises: What They Mean and How to Fix Them

Air conditioners tell you what's wrong if you know how to look and listen. Two symptoms give away most failures: ice and noise.
Frozen evaporator coil
Frost on the indoor coil or the copper suction line means cooling output has already collapsed. Ice forms when the coil runs colder than it should, which happens for exactly two reasons:
- Not enough air across the coil — dirty filter, collapsed or undersized return duct, dirty blower wheel, failing blower motor, or too many closed vents.
- Not enough refrigerant — a leak dropping the coil's boiling temperature below freezing.
What to do: thermostat OFF, fan ON, towels down, let it thaw 2-4 hours. Replace the filter and open all vents. If ice returns within a day you have a refrigerant or blower problem — running it frozen risks slugging liquid refrigerant into the compressor.
Decoding the noises

Short cycling: on and off every few minutes

Prevention that actually works
- Change filters every 1-3 months
- Keep two feet of clearance around the outdoor unit
- Rinse the condenser coil each spring
- Book a spring AC tune-up and a fall furnace tune-up
- Flush the condensate drain line yearly
